 Protecting West Coast Strandveld

A Call to Conserve One of South Africa’s Rarest Natural Treasures

Why Strandveld matters ...

The Western Cape Strandveld is a distinct coastal ecosystem exclusive to South Africa’s shores and is recognised as the richest floral kingdom on Earth.

In this vibrant landscape, resilient shrubs, succulents, and stunning spring wildflowers thrive amidst the dunes, salt-laden winds, and the vast sea, while a diverse array of birds, animals, and wildlife coexist in perfect harmony.

The Strandveld embodies more than just natural beauty; it is a living cultural landscape shaped by centuries of fishing, farming, and indigenous heritage.

This ecosystem not only protects coastlines and supports local agriculture but also attracts visitors from around the world with its untamed charm.

Conservation goals ...

By protecting and restoring the Strandveld, towards:

Safeguard biodiversity – Preserve endemic plant species and rare wildlife unique to this region.

Protect coastlines – Stabilise dunes and soils, and ensure the integrity of freshwater recharge zones.

Preserve heritage – Protect indigenous knowledge, and the cultural identity of the Cape.

Create sustainable livelihoods – Foster eco-tourism and industries that thrive in healthy ecosystems.

Build climate resilience – Establish a natural defense against drought, erosion, and rising sea levels.

A Legacy for future generations ...

Despite its importance, Strandveld is one of South Africa’s most threatened vegetation types. Urban expansion, mining, wind farming, invasive alien species, and overgrazing are fragmenting the landscape. Less than half of it remains intact, and much of what is left is outside protected areas.

Without prompt action, we face the loss of not only species but also the ecological services and cultural identity connected to this land.

Conserving the Strandveld is an investment in resilience, beauty, and heritage. It offers us the opportunity to ensure that future generations inherit more than just mine heaps and concrete; they will inherit a thriving, wild coastline that nurtures both nature and humanity.

The time to act is now.  By designating the Western Cape Strandveld as a protected conservation area, we secure one of South Africa’s most irreplaceable treasures for generations to come.
