Passionate about protecting the biodiversity of the Western Cape Strandveld, a group of land owners have joined hands to form the Strandveld Conservancy. Together, the aim is to protect and conserve the threatened Strandveld Fauna and Flora on the precious Cape West Coast, to the "living" benefit of future generations.
Strandveld is an endangered vegetation type that covers the sand dunes and coast line of the Western Cape in South Africa. It is unique in that it showcases an incredibly colorful habitat in Spring, when it bursts into flower - drawing visitors locally and abroad. It holds home to various protected and endangered species that will become extinct without protection. It has been stated that more than half of the the Cape's Strandveld has already been lost due to urbanisation, with only a small percentage of this unique vegetation type being actively conserved and now threatened by serious risks.
This landscape holds deep heritage and historical knowledge with traditional Cape fisherman communities. Help is therefore needed for both nature conservation and heritage preservation, or much would be lost to future generations.
With the 30 x 30 global target in protecting 30% of land and water, this initiative is aligned to local and international conservation targets and aimed at making a difference.
